THE HOLY ONES

Who are the holy ones still standing
Before the throne of Christ the King?
They’ve washed their robes in His blood,
Fixed their lives on God’s holy will.

Illumined, they stand in victory now.
Once turned against the Lord’s holy ways,
They were then sinners like us all.
Immersed in natural inclinations
Torn away by Satan’s spell.

The King turned darkness into light
By His coming, His words, and His rite.
He lay himself upon the Cross,
A Lamb whose slaughter set us free
To join the holy ones
Yes, you and me.

OVERCOMING SATAN’S GRAND SCHEME

Why do we hurt? Is it because we have done something wrong and God wants to punish us? Or is it because we are weak, unable to overcome adversity? Perhaps we’ve drifted away from healthy living habits and incurred needless suffering upon ourselves.

After studying the Scriptures, I don’t believe God wants to punish us for erring. He does admonish and correct us through His Word or through a wise, caring person who points us in the right direction. God only wants the best for us because He loves us. He allows us to grow in character, that we may desire to maintain a love relationship with Him. We were created to commune with Him and were commissioned to help others obtain eternal life with Him. The people who will, on the final Day of Judgement, be punished by God are those who rejected Him and His everlasting love. Their destruction will be on their own heads.

Now, back to the present day. God has given us an invitation to join Him in this life. Jesus says: “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Therefore, being weak and unable to overcome adversity will be our lot at times, if we refuse to join with, or abide in Him. The pain we suffer here can be alleviated by stretching out our arms and wrapping them around Jesus, our Good Shepherd, who protects His sheep from the harm Satan strives to inflict upon them.

Pain and suffering, to a large extent, have their root in the animosity Satan holds for Jesus and His creation. When Satan was in heaven, he was God’s honored covering angel, Lucifer. Still, Lucifer felt God was being unfair to him because God exalted Jesus above him. So God cast the long defiant, non-repentant Lucifer out of heaven. God warns us. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). Satan would have all of us perish with him in the lake of fire after the Last Judgement.

But we have a savior, Jesus Christ who loves us. If we’ve drifted toward unhealthy habits causing us pain, Jesus is at hand to join with us in helping us overcome anything. We can claim Jesus’ promise for ourselves: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Phil. 4:13).

—Scripture quotations taken from the NKJV.—

TO KNOW HIM

The well ran dry
Who knows the cause
Could it be all thoughts
Are straggled and lost
Flowing not from His Word

We need a guide
To stay on track
Lest we derail
Losing the oil of life
Precious God-given power
To just say no
Denying Satan a bounty
Your priceless life

Priceless souls
Christ died to save
Grab your shields now
Cling to His Word
Enter its courts
Fall before the King
In adoration
Praise and honor
Give Him your ear
Surrender your heart
Pour out your soul
For to know Him
Cleanses thoughts
Returns us to the well
That never runs dry

ALL SEEMS LOST

My heart is as stone.
How could I come to this?
I no longer grieve for the sinner,
nor ask God to heal him.
I stand on a pedestal,
Better than most.
Sin has entered my heart
and stayed.
Enough to erupt,
to rebel against God.
I reach out not
as in the days of laughter
when tickled by God’s love,
as light as an angel.

Satan stalks valleys, plateaus,
and mouintain tops
Seeking prey,
Stumbling the weak
and wrapping rope around running legs.

All seems lost
until the Bright Star rises
Steady and strong
Compelling our attention,
Wrapping light around us.
Lifting,
Unbinding
Asking will you come with Me?
Will you stay
with a heart that humbles,
Clearing evil away?
To live for Him
I long for this
A softened heart.
My heart of stone
I cast in the sea.
I take my part
in His kingdom
Reaching, holding,
loving,
praying.
It is His love that humbled my life
working a miracle within,
Creating my heart anew,
Turning my heart toward His.

GOD’S AGENDA

Many of us seek our own advancement, our own glory, at the expense of advancing the Kingdom of God. We are all guilty to some degree, of the sin of pride which feeds our agenda. Ideally, we would all put God first. However, our souls are tainted. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). We are all selfish beings. We put our own interests ahead of God’s kingdom at some point in our lives. We seek our own glorification, propping ourselves up as idols, wanting the worship only God deserves. This was Lucifer’s sin. He hung onto his pride so tenaciously that he fell completely and became Satan.

Lest we identify with Satan for too long, let’s step back, look at ourselves, and size up attributes identifying us as children of God. We are all capable of love. This is the keystone of our species. Therefore, God gave us the responsibility of caring for His creation. Only a species capable of love could attempt to perform this duty. To the extent we succeed in our time, shall we be judged. If through pride, we exclusively seek our own interests, we will fail as God’s stewards. However, if through love, we succeed in protecting the earth and all that is in it, we will leave a legacy born of unselfishness and love for God. As nurturers of God’s creation, we then forfeit self-interest, and effectively tame pride. Only then can we advance the Kingdom of God which exists in a spiritual plane, void of pride. Yes, God has an agenda, the Kingdom of God, which should be our primary concern.

(Quoted Scripture from NKJV.)

HATRED CORRODES

I took a break from writing the other day and plugged in a video cassette, Son of the Morning Star. Yes, I know we have DVDs these days and also Blue Ray — whatever that is — but I am finding more and more that current movies made after the decline in use of the VCR don’t appeal to me anymore. There’s just too much of every vice depicted and gory visuals shown in today’s movies. They all too often also lack a good story line. So I’m revisiting VHS tapes.

Getting back to Son of the Morning Star. It’s the story of the interaction of Crazy Horse’s people, narrated by a young Indian squaw, with the American white man, narrated by General Custer’s wife, Libby. I abhored our ancestors’ hatred directed toward the American Indian and mourned the resulting defensive, survival mode of the Indians leading to the Indian Wars.

Surely, the Indians’ possession of the Plains and lands the white man wanted for himself cannot explain the atrocities perpetuated against the Indian. Could it be the color of their skin, or even a diverse culture that could explain such hatred precipitating the wars, senseless mass killings, and almost complete annihalation of the American Indian culture? How can such hatred exist? Why does the same type of hatred exist today with civil wars and ethnic cleansing? I’m watching this movie and I just don’t get it. All I know is that hatred corrodes our hearts. Any sense of decency we once possessed is replaced with pure evil.

And what is the source of such evil? Could it be the devil, Satan? Or could we be active creators of such evil when we become separated from God? Certainly the devil plays a role in our sin, but can we be protected from assenting to thoughts of hatred and evil behavior by coming to God and abiding in Christ? Is it possible not to sin? It is, in theory. Every morning we need to get up and talk with God, rededicating ourselves to Him, letting Him know we live this day only to serve Him. Then hatred will be left behind, dead in the dust.
